Fire sweeps through chip shop

Originally published: May 16, 1981

A mystery fire raged at a Wednesfield fish and chip shop causing more than £10,000 of damage - only seconds after a lunctime queue of schoolchildren had left the building.

The blaze broke out in the fryer of the shop in Lichfield Road  and quickly spread to the rest of the building.

Staff fought to contain the fire with wet towels but were beaten back by fierce flames and choking black smoke.

Firemen wearing breathing aparatus dealt with the blaze.
