On the whole Western front, states a Paris message, the Germans are making great preparations for attack, and an offensive appears to be very imminent.
Troops have been brought up to the front line.
The sound of engines was heard during the night, and the German artillery was silent in order to avoid giving away its positions. French artillery reacted violently.
It is estimated that German reinforcements in the Rhineland have brought the strength of their troops between 700,000 and 800,000 in the area opposing a vital sector of the Maginot line.
All through last night the French observation posts and advance posts reported great activity in the German lines and areas in the rear.
On the roads from the front as far as ten miles back, numerous motor car headlights were seen imprudently switched on.
In the front line itself, electric torches shone like glowworms throughout the night.
These indicated that new troops were arriving in the line, and were being shown into their positions and that the officers were trying to find their way and read their maps.
The communique read:-
"Between the Moselle and the Saar there was great activitiy within the enemy lines.
"West Of Wissembourg there was patrol activity on both sides."
