Search is on to find first intake of pupils

Former pupils of Cannock Grammar School are searching for old classmates for a 50th anniversary reunion later this year.

The 95-strong first intake, arriving at the brand new school in 1955, had the place to themselves for the first year.

The Grammar School was unusual for its day because it was new and also because it was mixed. The school lasted 22 years before becoming Chenet High School, then Cannock Chase High School. Its catchment area covered Cannock, Burntwood, Brownhills and Great Wyrley.

Many of the grammar school's teachers still meet regularly in Cannock.

Last year 132 ex-pupils and teachers held a dry run at the Roman Way Hotel, on the A5 in Hatherton.

Now the organisers want to find even more former students for the 50 year milestone. The reunion will be for the school's first intake, those who joined in 1956, 57 and 58, and sixth formers who joined in 1960 and 1961.

It will take place at Chase High School in October, and everyone is invited to bring along their old uniforms, photographs and other school memorabilia.

Ex-pupils living in Bratislava and Tenerife came back for last year's reunion, and this year one former student is expected to return from South Africa.

The photograph seen here features a snapshot at life at the school. Former pupil Jennifer Corfield, who is helping organise the reunion, said: "The school rugby team was quite successful.

"The other picture was taken outside St Luke's Church with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Fisher, after a service at the church on prizegiving day.

"His full name was the Most Rev Archbishop, Lord Fisher of Lambeth, formerly Archbishop of Canterbury. The date for the church service was April 11, 1962."

Former pupils who wish to attend should contact Nigel Bailey on 01543 574624, 07799 654842 or by e-mail on nbailey@englandathletics.org
